When I first thought about starting a blog, I had this idea in my head that everything needed to be perfect. I needed a flawless website, a beautifully designed logo, and the most amazing content ready to go from day one. In other words, I put so much pressure on myself that I didn’t actually start for months.
Let me tell you now: you don’t need everything to be perfect to get started. In fact, starting small and imperfect is the best way to get moving. Here’s how my journey into content creation began and why it’s okay to take those first steps, even if they feel messy.
The Pressure of Perfection
Like many moms, I often found myself scrolling through Instagram, looking at other bloggers who seemed to have it all together. Their websites were beautiful, their content was polished, and their branding was on point. Meanwhile, I didn’t even know where to begin with choosing a theme for my website.
That fear of not being good enough stopped me in my tracks. I kept telling myself, “I’ll start once I figure everything out,” but the truth is, there’s no such thing as figuring everything out before you begin. You learn as you go.
Looking back now, I wish I had given myself permission to start imperfectly from the beginning. It would’ve saved me so much time and stress!
Why Starting Small is Okay
When I finally stopped waiting for the perfect moment, I made a decision: I would start small. I set up a basic blog with a free theme, wrote a few blog posts, and launched it. Was it perfect? No. Was it polished? Definitely not. But it was mine, and it was out there.
Starting small gave me the chance to learn and grow without the pressure of being perfect. I experimented with different types of content, tweaked my design as I learned more about what I liked, and most importantly, I stopped letting fear hold me back.
If you’re thinking about starting something—whether it’s a blog, a side business, or a social media channel—start small. Your content doesn’t need to be perfect, and you don’t need a fancy website to get your message out there. What matters is that you take the first step.
Learning and Growing Along the Way
What I didn’t realize at the time was that you don’t need to have everything figured out before you start. In fact, the best way to learn is by doing. The more I wrote, the more confident I became in my voice. The more I experimented with my website, the more I understood what worked for me.
Starting small gave me the freedom to make mistakes and grow from them. I wasn’t tied to a big, polished brand that had to be perfect from the get-go. I could be real, experiment, and figure out what worked for me over time.
Takeaway for Moms
If you’re a mom with big ideas but you’re waiting for everything to be just right before you start, this is your permission to let go of that mindset. Start small, start imperfectly, but just start. You’ll learn and grow along the way, and before you know it, those small steps will turn into big progress.
